BIOL 1090 - Human Biology
Throughout this course we were asked to read several articles that were both for and against various controversial medical practices, and to look at both takes on each issue objectively and distinguish between the facts and fallacies in each article. One of these Taking Sides assignments concerned whether or not doctors should prescribe medication based on the patient's race. The first article "I am a Racially Profiling Doctor", was written by Sally Satel and it appeared in The New York Times on May 5, 2002. In this article, Sally Satel argues that it is important to take a patient's race into account when prescribing medication because many diseases and responses to treatments cluster by race. The second article "Facts and Fiction: BiDil and the Resurgence of Racial Medicine", was written by Gregory Michael Dorr and David S. Jones, and it appeared in the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics in the fall of 2008. In their article Gregory Dorr and David Jones argue that there is a risk to using a patient's race and ethnicity in the selection of treatment options.

In using the form that my instructor provided for analyzing the articles, I was able to identify what was opinion and what was empirical evidence that the authors used in support of their arguments.
While working on this and other Taking Sides assignments in this course, it improved my critical thinking skills by enabling me to objectively look at both sides of an issue, and to better identify the tactics that are used in order to persuade a reader in an effective argument. These skills will help me throughout my life and academic career by allowing me to make informed decisions and form opinions on various social issues that will without a doubt have an impact on me now and in the future.
